Check Federal Prison Releases

To find someone released from Federal Bureau of Prisons institutions after a Highland County connection, first identify whether the person was federally sentenced or only held before trial. The BOP locator covers sentenced federal prisoners and many former prisoners. The U.S. Marshals Service controls the pretrial custody and transport branch, which does not have the same public locator. No federal prison was identified inside Highland County. A local roster disappearance therefore cannot establish federal release. The federal record, court docket, and any later state or immigration custody must be checked separately.

Federal Releases Serving Highland County

No Federal Bureau of Prisons institution was found in Highland County. A federal defendant with a Highland County connection may be held temporarily under U.S. Marshals Service authority in a contract facility, then moved through the federal system after conviction. The place of temporary detention should not be confused with BOP sentence custody or with a community release.

A completed federal prison term may produce a BOP result with a past release date and a status such as Released or Not in BOP Custody. That proves departure from BOP custody within the locator's scope. It does not establish that the person is free of every form of custody or supervision. State custody, immigration custody, federal supervision, or another legal obligation may remain.

The Highland County release-record search supplies the local starting point. Move to BOP only when a federal sentence, federal identifier, or reliable court record supports that branch. A person leaving the Highland County jail for USMS is being transferred, not released to the community.

Search the BOP Release Locator

The BOP Inmate Locator accepts either a federal number or biographical details. Number searches can use a BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS identifier. A name search also asks for identifying data that can narrow similar results. Federal records in the locator generally cover people held by BOP from 1982 onward.

  1. Choose number search when a BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number is known. This is the strongest match route.
  2. Otherwise enter the legal name and available identifying details. Compare all returned people rather than selecting by name alone.
  3. Read the location and status together. A named institution indicates BOP placement, while a past release date can identify a former prisoner.
  4. Preserve the exact words Released, Not in BOP Custody, In Transit, or the displayed management location.
  5. Check the federal docket or another agency when the result does not answer where the person went next.

Federal release limit: Not in BOP Custody means only that BOP no longer holds the person. It does not rule out another custody system or supervision.

A future date is projected and can change through lawful recalculation. In Transit describes movement within federal custody. A community-corrections management location can represent a continuing custody stage rather than final discharge. The exact BOP label should be quoted without turning each non-prison result into community release.

BOP Federal Release Record Fields

The public locator is designed to answer a limited custody question. It is not the full federal case file. Match identity before using the release date, then separate the locator's custody statement from any court-ordered supervision or later transfer.

Field or resultWhat it indicatesWhat it does not prove
Federal register or agency numberLinks the result to a specific federal record. It does not explain the court disposition alone.
Name and identifying dataHelps distinguish people with similar names.A name match without other data may be wrong.
Current locationShows the institution or management placement displayed by BOP.It may not describe every temporary movement.
Release dateShows the federal date published for the matching record.A future date is not a guaranteed exit.
Released or Not in BOP CustodyShows departure from BOP custody. It does not end supervision or other custody.
In TransitSignals continued federal movement. It is not final release.

The official BOP locator is shown in the successful manifest image below.

Federal BOP release locator for a Highland County custody search

This federal search should be used for BOP sentence custody, not for an ordinary Highland County jail stay or an unsupported immigration guess.

Note: Preserve the displayed federal status exactly, since similar-looking results can describe release, transit, or continued managed custody.

USMS Pretrial Custody Releases

The U.S. Marshals Service is responsible for federal pretrial detainees and transport. A person may be housed in a local or contract facility without yet being a BOP prisoner serving a sentence. The Marshals Service does not offer a broad historical public name locator that works like the BOP tool.

When a Highland County booking record identifies a USMS hold, use the federal court docket, counsel, or the responsible USMS district contact. The PACER Case Locator is the federal court path named in the research. Docket entries can explain detention, release conditions, judgment, and sentence, while the custodial agency confirms the physical movement.

A county roster disappearance does not close that inquiry. Transfer from the Highland County Justice Center to USMS remains custody. Likewise, a person who has not yet entered BOP may not appear in the BOP locator in the way a sentenced federal prisoner does.

Federal Release Records and Contact

The BOP locator is the public first contact for sentenced federal custody and former BOP prisoners. The research does not identify a BOP institution, records counter, or release office in Highland County. As a result, a local street address or local BOP phone number would be false. Use the national locator and the agency responsible for the actual case.

For detail beyond the locator, federal FOIA or Privacy Act rules may apply. Nonpublic personal material can require proof of identity or authorization. A narrow request should identify the federal number, person, date range, and exact custody or release field sought. The public locator should be checked first because it may already answer the basic status question.

Pretrial information follows the USMS and federal court route. Immigration information follows ICE. These systems are not interchangeable, and each office may apply different access limits to personal records.

Older Federal Release Records

BOP describes its locator as covering federal inmates from 1982 onward. An older absence should not be treated as proof that no federal custody existed. BOP directs older inquiries to the National Archives, where access depends on the available record series and identifying details.

For any period, identity matching remains vital. Search the federal number when possible. If only a name is known, add date and other permitted details, then compare the result with the federal case. A court docket may establish conviction and sentence even when the custody locator is outside its historical range.

Release date and final legal discharge also differ. The BOP result concerns prison custody. A federal court record and the responsible supervision authority address obligations that may continue afterward.

Note: A locator miss can reflect historical coverage, spelling, identity data, or the wrong federal agency rather than a confirmed release.

Federal Release Versus ICE Transfer

Immigration custody is a separate federal branch. If a Highland County or federal record shows an ICE detainer or transfer, use the Online Detainee Locator by nine-digit A-number and country of birth or by exact biographical details. Leading zeros may be needed for the A-number. ICE states that the locator can include current custody and releases within a limited recent period.

A failed ICE search can result from spelling, recent processing, transfer, age rules, release, or the record aging out. It cannot establish release on its own. The Detention Reporting and Information Line is 1-888-351-4024 when locator help is needed. The separate Highland County immigration custody page keeps that route distinct from BOP sentence release.

Sequence matters. A person may leave BOP and enter immigration custody, or leave the Highland jail directly under an ICE hold. In either case, departure from the sending agency is a transfer until the receiving system establishes the next status.

Highland Jail Names Before Federal Transfer

The sheriff uses Highland County Justice Center for the local corrections operation, while the regional roster calls the provider Highland County Jail. They are the paired sheriff and roster names for the same local custody channel, not separate places. A federal hold or USMS transfer may be associated with either wording.

The official Corrections Division page connects the Justice Center name to the roster. When matching a later federal result, use the local booking, case number, federal identifier, and transfer entry. The sheriff's records route is the county source for the retained booking and transfer fields. The change in agency name should not be mistaken for release or for a second Highland jail.

Highland Federal Custody Sources

The correct source depends on the federal stage. The Highland jail roster, BOP locator, USMS contacts, federal docket, and ICE locator each cover a different slice of custody.

No BOP institution was identified in Highland County. The page therefore uses national records rather than pretending that a federal facility, release desk, or local schedule exists in the county.

Note: The correct national source depends on whether the person is pretrial, serving a BOP sentence, formerly imprisoned, or in immigration custody.
